:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rich in Philly -- A broad and balanced view, and a pleasure to read : Howard Markell re-tells the story of the race to discover the structure of DNA, ground first plowed by co-discover James Watson himself in "The Double Helix." Dr. Markell writes as someone who was not one of the protagonists, and he is a thoughtful historian who takes good advantage of 53 years of perspective and his own archival research and interviews in recent years. The result is every bit as entertaining as "The Double Helix," but with more empathy toward many of those who "lost the race" to Watson and Crick and with a broader view of the world of big science during the post-World War II period.
